Weill Cornell Medicine’s neurosurgery service emerged at the top of the global list for 2022, ranking #1 in the world according to Newsweek magazine. From November 14-16, 2022, Dr. Roger Härtl, the Hansen-MacDonald Professor of Neurological Surgery and Director of Neurosurgery Spine at the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center in New York, led the OMI-MEX Weill Cornell Seminar in Neurosurgery (Spine) in Mexico, teaching 26 fellows from Mexico City and surrounding areas. Dr. Claudius Thomé, Director and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Innsbruck, co-led the course. The dynamic duo have taught together in Salzburg many times, but this was the first time they have expanded their OMI leadership to Mexico!
Additional Mexican faculty included Dr. Rodrigo Navarro-Ramirez, Consultant and Associate Surgeon in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the Mayo Clinic, and José Antonio Soriano Sánchez, Neurosurgeon at the American British Cowdray Medical Center, I.A.P. The course directors put together an excellent schedule, including 11 didactic lectures which covered topics such as Spinal Surgery and Evidence-Based Outcomes, 6 Ts of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Lateral Approaches to the Spine, and more. Monday and Tuesday afternoon offered fellows a chance to share their personal case presentations, demonstrating unique cases from their work experience. 16 cases were presented and 1 case was selected by the faculty as an excellent case presentation.
Last but not least, the closing ceremony was held on Wednesday afternoon, in which fellows received their certificates of participation. The OMI is thrilled to have Weill Cornell as a long-time partner, now expanding even more internationally, and is proud of the outstanding healthcare and education they provide!
